Aim:
This Pilates Academy Foundation Level 2 course recognises the skills, knowledge and competence required of an individual to work in an unsupervised capacity, planning, instructing and evaluating the safety and effectiveness of a Mat Pilates session.
Qualification Overview:
Candidates who take the Certificate in teaching Mat Pilates will be expected to demonstrate an understanding of the following broad areas:
Exercise and Fitness Knowledge covering bones and joints, muscles and muscle actions, nutrition, cardiovascular system, short and long term effects of exercise
- Basic principles of Mat Pilates
- How to plan, teach and evaluate a Mat Pilates session
- How to progress a programme of Mat Pilates exercises
- Dealing with special populations
- Postural analysis and programme planning
- Visual cuing, imagery and teaching skills
- Voice projection
- Music
Qualification Structure:
Unit 1: Exercise and Fitness Knowledge = 40 hours
Unit 2: Demonstrate Healthy Living = 10 hours
Unit 3: Instruct, Manage, Adapt and Evaluate a Mat Pilates session = 50 hours
All units are mandatory
This qualification is vocationally related and provides candidates with the opportunity to study for and be assessed on the underpinning knowledge and practical skills which are essential to teach Matwork Pilates sessions.
Target Candidates: Individuals currently working as Fitness Instructors who hold a Level 2 Fitness Instructor Qualification.
There are no formal entry requirement to gain access to this VRQ Level 2 qualification. However a basic knowledge and experience of practising Pilates prior to entry, would be useful.
NB: Candidates must be in possession of a current CPR/HSE approved first aid qualification for recognition by the Register of Exercise Professionals.
Examinations: Dates to be advised
To successfully gain certification candidates need to pass:
- Theory paper
- Practical assessment
- Case Studies and completed portfolio
- Complete 80-85% of the course
Course Fees:
The course fee is £950 and a deposit of £500 is required at the time of booking and the remainder paid in full, one month prior to the course starting.

CYQ
Level 3 Certificate in Matwork Pilates
The progress of increasing the number of level 3 advanced instructors is very important to the fitness industry as these are more skilled to work with clients from a broad range of age and ability. The Register of Exercise Professional is encouraging the Fitness Industry to aim for 80% of Exercise Instructors to be at level 3 by 2010.
All level 2 and 3 instructors need to attend CPD (Continuing Professional Development) training days related to their subject every year.
CYQ Level 3 Certificate in Matwork Pilates
150 Guided Learning Hours

The Course is divided into 4 sections:
Unit 1 – Exercise and Fitness Knowledge = 50 hours
Unit 2 - Principles and Fundamental of Mat Pilates = 50 hours
Unit 3 - Plan and Prepare to instruct a progressive Mat Pilates Session = 20 hours
Unit 4 - Instruct, Manage, Adapt and Evaluate a Mat Pilates Session, incorporating small equipment = 30 hours
In addition, you will need to log 100 hours of working with clients.
Target Candidates: Individuals currently working as Fitness Instructors who hold a level 2 Fitness Instructor Qualification or equivalent. Dance Teachers, sports coaches, physiotherapists, physical therapists.
Pre-requisites: There are no formal entry requirements to gain access to the CYQ Level 3 Certificate in Teaching Mat Pilates, however it would be advisable for students to study the Pilates Academy Foundation Level 2 course. A basic knowledge and some experience of practicing Pilates prior to attending the course would be helpful.
Progression Routes:
Progression from a CYQ Level 3 Certificate in Teaching Mat Pilates maybe employment within the Fitness Leisure and Recreation Industry.

Children’s fitness has become increasingly important and is a
rapidly growing area within the Health & Fitness Industry. Many Health
Clubs, Leisure Centre, schools and Instructors run exercise classes and
after school clubs for children.
It’s hoped that this
qualification will set a benchmark for industry standards, providing
Instructors who are equipped with the knowledge,
understanding and skills to plan and teach safe, fun and effective classes
that inspire and motivate children to participate regularly in fitness
activities.
Becoming qualified
Assessment is both practical and theory.
A practical assessment allows you the opportunity to demonstrate your
knowledge and teaching skills for a group of children aged either 5-11
or 12 to 16 year olds. The theory assessment covers both age ranges.

- Work in a Children’s
Fitness Studio in a Health Club or Leisure Centre, or run an after
school club

Entry requirements
Although not essential, it is recommended that you have some experience
of working with children and an interest in the Health and Fitness Industry.

donation, you’ll have the chance to
receive a Children’s Activity Pack produced by the British Heart
Foundation, supplied via CYQ. This superb resource could prove invaluable
to you and includes task cards showing 100s of development exercises,
dance and rhythmic activities.

Opportunities-Fitness Industry
Freelance
part time sport science tutors, teaching at level 2 and level
3 – ideally should have a certificate
in education or be working towards this qualification and with
at least 1 years experience.
Assessors
Part time assessors are required to work on a freelance basis
who hold a D33/34 A1/V1 qualification. We are looking for qualified
assessors who specialise in the fitness industry, ether OCR or
CYQ.
Pilates instructors
