What is Shiatsu?

Shiatsu is a traditional hands-on Japanese healing therapy - the word "shiatsu" means "finger pressure" as this is the main technique used.  Pressure may also be applied to the body with the practitioner's palms, thumbs, elbow and feet to promote the flow of energy through the body.  Shiatsu can help in a wide range of conditions from specific injuries to more general symptoms of poor health.  Shiatsu is a very relaxing therapy and regular sessions can help prevent the build up of stress in our daily lives.  It can relax both mind and body, restore and balance energy, ease tension and stiffness, enhance circulation and general well-being.

How is itconducted?

At the first appointment your therapist will take full details of your past and current state of health and will need details of any medication you are taking in order to adapt the session to your particular state of health and mobility. A review is undertaken at the start of each subsequent session.

For a shiatsu session no oils are used and you remain fully clothed throughout.  You will lie on a comfortable futon (padded mat) at floor level with pillows available and you may be asked to lie on your front, back, side or to sit during the session.  For clients who are less mobile the session can be carried out in a chair/wheelchair.

To gain maximum benefit and to assist the therapist please wear warm, loose comfortable clothing such as a tracksuit or cotton trousers, T shirt/sweatshirt and socks. Preferably no jeans, tight clothing, short skirts or sleeveless tops.

How many sessions?

This depends on why you visit and the state of your health – some clients have regular sessions over a long period of time as they appreciate the benefits to general health and well-being.

Others who visit with more specific complaints are recommended to have at least 6 sessions with top-up appointments as and when required to gain maximum benefit.
