What
is Chiropractic treatment?
Chiropractic is a skeletal therapy which has the aim of maintaining
the spine and nervous system (and thereby the whole body) in good
health and harmony. Alongside Osteopathy, Chiropractic is probably
the form of natural medicine most accepted in the orthodox medical
world. Medical doctors routinely refer patients to Chiropractors
recognising that they have methods of treating the root causes
of pain that doctors can only dull with drugs.
Chiropractors
don't actually "put bones back" as many
people think. A bone only "comes out " if it is dislocated.
Chiropractors work on subluxations where a bone is out of alignment
relative to others. Chiropractic is very popular indeed and growing
rapidly in popularity because the results are often seen as being
nigh-on miraculous. It's not unusual for patients to almost have
to crawl in, in agony and walk out with head held high and free
of pain!
Chiropractic
is a particularly successful therapy for treating mechanical
problems of the spine which can cause back & neck
pain, sciatica and headaches etc. It can also be useful in some
cases of rheumatism and arthritis. It can also help:
chest
movement and the relief of asthma
various
feelings of tightness and lack of mobility in joints all around
the body
back
problems and aches and pains during pregnancy

How
is a Chiropractic session conducted?
A full case history is taken. The Chiropractor will then examine
the patients spine and test the mobility of limbs and will feel
along the spine to ascertain if any vertebrae or joints are impaired.
The therapy mainly consists of adjusting the joints using pressure
and manipulation. The McTimoney technique is mostly used which
is a whole body approach. The treatment is not actually painful
and many people find it quite relaxing! It is a very pragmatic
and down-to earth therapy and ideal for clients who like a solid
medical approach and is well recognised and respected by most doctors.

How
many Chiropractic treatments will be needed?
Its difficult to say since all clients are different and will
make progress at different rates. Often improvements will be noticed
after just one session, however a number of sessions (maybe four
or five) are advisable to gain full benefit.
Many clients find it valuable to continue with occasional sessions
at anything from fortnightly to six monthly intervals to suit the
individual.
